Umar M Shareef started his career at the age of 14 as a stage performer in Kaduna. He joined theatre and adopted the stage name Umar Zarif, inspired by his favorite comedian Munawar Zarif. Later, he changed his name to Umar Sharif after the Egyptian actor Omar Sharif. In 1976, he wrote his first stage play Bionic Servant, which featured Moin Akhter as an actor. This marked their first collaboration. Some of his most popular comedy stage plays were Bakra Qistoon Pe and Buddha Ghar Pe Ha.
In 2002, he wrote his first TV serial Parda Na Uthao. In October 2009, he started hosting his own late-night talk show The Shareef Show on Geo TV. He interviewed many celebrities and politicians on the show. He also appeared as a guest judge on the Indian stand-up comedy show The Great Indian Laughter Challenge.
His first movie was Hisaab (1986), but he became famous for Mr 420 (1992), a movie where he acted, directed, wrote, and sang. This movie led to a revival of Pakistan's cinema till 1998 and also influenced Bollywood. He received national awards for best director and best actor for Mr 420. He received ten Nigar Awards and four Graduate Awards for his movies.
